WELCOME TO THE YEAR 2 PAGE!
We have had a fantastic start to Year 2 and we are really proud of how quickly the children have settled into their new class.
Please continue to help your child be independent by encouraging them to hang up their coats, put their book bags in the box and refill their water bottles each morning.
If you were unable to attend the welcome meeting, you will find all the information you need to know in the letter below.
How can I help at home?
Continue to read to and with your child as much as possible. This doesn't need to be for long. You don't just need to read the books that your child brings home either. You could read information books, websites, comics, poems or recipes. Be as inventive as you like!
Try to write in your child's reading record regularly.
Practice basic number facts. In Year 2, the children should know all of the addition and subtraction facts up to 20. Hit the button is a good site for practising these:
We have been learning how to create programs in 'scratch'. You can try it out here:
A Walk in the Woods
We started our learning journey by following the journey of 'The Lonely Beast' who left his home in the woods to find a friend.
We mapped his perilous journey across dangerous rivers and down waterfalls until he reached the sea.
We wrote poems in groups about the underwater creatures he might encounter...
In our maths lessons we have been exploring different ways of representing numbers.
On Wednesday 27th November, we went on a fantastic, and very muddy, trip to the woods. We collected leaves, made leaf art and looked for signs of autumn. We also watched how to make a fire and enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate around the campfire. After lunch we chose from a wide range of activities, such as making paint, finding minibeasts, shelter building, litter picking and playing with natural clay. It was wonderful to spend the day learning outdoors. Many thanks to our forest school teacher for the day, Katie, from the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
